Here in the Canadian Shield, trees grow, so it seems, right out of the rocks. They scramble when very young however they can for any root hold with a patch of dirt and, over time, the roots seek dirt and grow into rock crevices. The results are like the photos above - trees growing out of the rocks.

As the trees grow and shed their little bits of leaves and bark this material rots and becomes soil thereby allowing more moisture to be retained and feed the trees. So, you could say that this flora is thriving in its own poop!! Only in Canada you say!!!
