Here are more icicles hanging over a roof edge due to an ice dam. They look nice, but they certainly are indicative of a problem.

Many homes do suffer from inadequate insulation that causes such problems. However, this year we have not had enough thaws to clear the eaves of snow. As the eaves were full of snow and any light thaw created ice in the trough in which they have become a trap for further daming to occur. Spring will cure this problem too.

A perfect example of why the code calls for eave protection under the shingles in the form of "ice and water shield", to protect against leakage when water backs up above the ice dam.

If you were to rake the snow off your roof 5 to 6 feet up from the eaves sure does help.
